There's a school for this (and it's for them)
You've watched the confidence drain out of your young adult like water from a bath. The one who used to sing in the kitchen, who had plans, who walked into a room like they owned it. Now they barely leave their bedroom. Their self-esteem is on the floor, the world feels too big and too sharp, and every day out there feels like one they can't face.
And you can't do it for them. You've tried. You can love them, feed them, listen at 2am, but you can't hand them their confidence back. That's one of the cruellest parts of all this.
So when I found out there's a place built for exactly this, somewhere they can go to rebuild, gently, at their own pace, I wanted to tell you straight away.
So what is a Recovery College?
It isn't a hospital, and it isn't therapy. It's more like a gentle adult learning centre for mental health and wellbeing, built on three simple ideas: hope, opportunity, and a bit of control over your own life again.
For a young adult who's lost their footing, that's the whole point. Somewhere to understand what they're dealing with, learn practical skills, and slowly find their way back into the world, surrounded by people who get it. Not patients. Students. That shift on its own can do something for a battered sense of self.
The courses are built and often taught by people who've lived it themselves, so your young one isn't being talked down to. They're learning from people who've walked out the other side.
Why it can matter so much for them
When you've been unwell for a while, the world shrinks. Confidence goes. You forget you're capable of anything at all. A Recovery College is a soft, low-pressure way back in. A reason to get dressed and leave the house. A small goal that isn't about being "fixed", just about learning something and being among people again.
For a young adult rebuilding their self-esteem, that quiet message, you're a learner, not a diagnosis, can be worth more than it sounds. It's a step towards finding their place in the world again, one course at a time.
What you can do with this
You can't enrol them, and you can't want it for them harder than they want it. But you can plant the seed. Mention it lightly. Leave the link where they'll see it. Say "I found this, no pressure, just thought of you."
Sometimes the most powerful thing we do as mums isn't carrying them, it's quietly pointing at a door and letting them choose to walk through it when they're ready.
Where to find it
They're run by NHS trusts all over the country, so there's very likely one near you. A quick search for "Recovery College" and your area will find it.
Ours is the Humber Recovery and Wellbeing College. The courses are free, there's an adult college for 18 and over and a youth one for ages 11 to 18, and you can do things face to face, online at your own pace, or through their podcasts. Have a look at humberrecoverycollege.nhs.uk.
Whether your young one is ready today or just needs to know the door is there for when they are, it's worth knowing about.
I'll report back
We haven't been through it ourselves yet, I only just found it. When we do, I'll tell you honestly how we get on. But I didn't want to sit on it, because if your young adult is somewhere in that lost, shrunken place right now, this might be one of the gentler ways back.
There is a way back. 💙
