Every chapter started as a note I made to survive the day it happened.
Hi (name)
There's a specific kind of tired that comes after a bad night with your young adult.
Not sleepy-tired. Wrung-out tired. The kind where you sit on the edge of the bed at midnight and think: there has to be something that tells me what to do right now.
There wasn't.
I looked. Properly looked. Parenting books that stopped at "toddler tantrums." Clinical books written for professionals, not for the mum still shaking from the argument two hours ago. Nothing written by someone who'd actually stood in that kitchen.
So I started writing down what worked. And what didn't. Late at night, on my phone, half the time still in my dressing gown, because if I didn't capture it right then I knew I'd lose it in the fog of the next difficult day.
That's genuinely how โA Real Parent's Guide to Emotional Dysregulationโ got written. Not as a business plan. As survival notes that turned into something I wished someone had given me years earlier.
It's built around three things that actually helped when nothing else did: Pause, Lower, Less, not as a neat framework, but as the three things I clung to on the worst nights.
If you're sat on the edge of your own bed tonight wondering if anyone's written down what to actually do, this is what I wish someone had handed me.
