Chaos to Calm, honest September reflection for mums of young adults with emotional dysregulation

I'm Not Doing "New Season, New Me" This September

September 27, 2026

47 fresh start posts before 9am

I counted the other morning.

Scrolled through my phone before I'd even made a coffee, and by the time I put it down I'd seen 47 posts about fresh starts, new routines, "September energy."

Colour-coded planners. Gym memberships. Someone's daughter starting her dream job in a blazer that still had the fold lines in it.

I sat there in yesterday's clothes, having had three hours' sleep, wondering when exactly my life became the thing that doesn't fit the aesthetic.

The version nobody's posting

Here's what nobody's posting: the version where nothing's fixed yet. Where your young adult is exactly where they were in July. Where you're not launching anything, reinventing anything, becoming anyone new. You're just still here, still doing this, and the internet has decided that's not content.

I'm not going to pretend I've got some clever reframe for you. Some "actually THIS is the real fresh start" twist.

What actually shifted something

But I will tell you the one thing that actually shifted something for me, eventually. It wasn't a routine or a system. It was noticing how much energy I was spending trying to look like I had it handled, for people who were never going to understand it anyway.

So I stopped trying to build a whole new system every September. I just started reaching for whatever small thing was already sitting there when things got hard. The wheel on the fridge when words wouldn't come. The book on the nights I needed someone else's voice instead of my own thoughts on loop. The group at 11pm when I needed a person, not a plan.

That's genuinely it. Not a fresh start. Just reaching for what's already there.

Frequently asked questions

What support does Chaos to Calm actually offer?
A free magnetic Feelings Wheel, a book, a free Facebook group, Chat with Sami, and The Harbour membership community, all built from Sami's own lived experience supporting a young adult with emotional dysregulation.

Do I need to use all of it at once?
No. Most mums just reach for whatever's already in front of them when things get hard, there's no set order or system to follow.

If you've not found your version of "what's already there" yet, have a look around when you've got five minutes. No pressure to use any of it. Just so it's there when you need it.
